Keontez Nashee Stephens, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically passed away on July 28, 2020, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on February 24, 1998, in Danville, Virginia, Keontez was the son of Keshawn Montague and Alphonso Stephens. He was transported to Carolina Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The incident occurred in the evening on Westwinds Court, Charlotte, NC.
Officers responded to an Assault with Deadly Weapon call and found Keontez in the street with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Following an investigation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified Ziaire Mayo, a 19-year-old male, as the suspect in the homicide case. A murder warrant was issued for Mayo's arrest, and he subsequently turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation into Keontez Stephens' death remains active and ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Keontez's death has left a profound impact on his family and community. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, and several other relatives and friends. The family held a graveside service on August 8, 2020, at Danville Memorial Gardens, adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.
