Lanell Fields Jr., a 25-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on September 29, 2020, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred on the 400 block of North Springfield Avenue around 12:48 p.m. Fields was struck in the chest and was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately four hours later.
Fields, also known by the nickname "Sumo," was a member of the GhostMobb gang.
His death is believed to be a retaliatory act by members of the BTBG gang, following the murder of Earnest James, also known as "Dern" or "22," a 21-year-old member of BTBG. James was killed two days earlier on September 27, 2020, in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
The investigation into Fields' murder is ongoing, with Area Four detectives leading the case. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police have not identified any suspects. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Fields' death a homicide.
