Michael Giles, a 26-year-old from Chicago, was tragically killed on April 19, 2008. Giles' body was found buried under a concrete slab in his backyard, several months after he went missing. His death was orchestrated by his girlfriend, Kwaneta Harris, in what became a complex and deeply disturbing crime. Following an investigation, it was revealed that Harris had gone to great lengths to cover up the murder, including sending text messages impersonating Giles and attempting to lease his house
after his death.
Kwaneta Harris manipulated people around her, including hiring a 13-year-old to assist in digging a hole in the backyard, initially claiming it was for a pond. She then buried Giles there and later had concrete poured over the site. The crime extended beyond the murder, as she also sought access to Giles’ financial assets, successfully stealing over $200,000 by pretending that Giles was still alive but unwell. Eventually, the police discovered her involvement through various incriminating evidence, including suspicious internet searches on her computer.
In 2009, Harris pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Her efforts to escape responsibility did not end after the crime; she even forged a judge's signature to attempt to reduce her sentence. Despite her efforts, she remains incarcerated, with eligibility for parole only in 2033. The case of Michael Giles and his untimely death exemplifies the tragic consequences of intimate partner violence and highlights the extent of manipulation and deception involved in this brutal crime.
