Deputy Sheriff August Esteves, aged 47, was killed in the line of duty on April 17, 1923, in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Esteves and his colleague, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Estopinal, were attempting to stop bootleggers near the Lake Borgne Canal Bridge in Violet. Esteves was fatally shot in the back with a load of buckshot while Estopinal was shot by the driver of a truck hauling illegal liquor. The suspects managed to escape in a car that pulled up behind the truck.
