On July 31, 2024, Christopher David Cooke, a 42-year-old male, was killed in a homicide incident that unfolded in New Orleans, Louisiana. His death was the result of gunshot-related injuries. The incident occurred in the 8300 block of a service road for Interstate 10. Cooke was a beloved father, husband, son, and brother, known for his warm and charismatic personality.
He had a natural gift for connecting with people and was described by friends and family as someone who would give the shirt off his back.
From a young age, Christopher developed a passion for auto mechanics, a skill that would shape his professional life. At fifteen, he took apart and rebuilt his first engine, a testament to his burgeoning talent. This passion led him to a successful career, managing a SpeeDee Oil Change on St. Charles Avenue and later owning his own business, Go Mobile Mechanics. His success was attributed not only to his technical skills but also to his ability to make his customers feel seen and valued. He was a graduate of East Jefferson High School, class of 2000.
The investigation into Christopher’s death led the New Orleans Police Department to identify a suspect. In connection with this case and a related homicide that occurred on the same day, Jamal Washington was arrested on April 23, 2025. Following an interview with detectives, a warrant was obtained, and Washington was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on one count of second-degree murder for the death of Christopher Cooke and another for the second victim. At the time of the arrest, law enforcement stated that the investigation had determined the two homicides to be connected.
