In the early morning hours of July 2, 1977, Louisiana State Trooper Donald Charles Cleveland, a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Louisiana 94, situated between Lafayette and Breaux Bridge. Trooper Cleveland, who had been with the Louisiana State Police for just over a year, initiated the stop of a vehicle for a lighting violation after it departed from a local nightclub's parking lot.
