In the late hours of a September evening in Lafayette, Louisiana, the life of Emmanuel Oneal Barnes, a 36-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On September 16, 2022, Lafayette Police were called to the scene of a shooting in the 100 block of Fitzgerald Street, where they found Barnes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the death of Emmanuel Barnes quickly pointed to a
young suspect. Within a day of the shooting, law enforcement officials had identified and arrested 17-year-old Damarcus Skipper in connection with the homicide. The swiftness of the arrest brought a sense of resolution to the initial stages of the investigation, though the community was left to grapple with the violent loss of life and the young age of the accused.
Following his arrest, Damarcus Skipper was charged with the second-degree murder of Emmanuel Oneal Barnes. In November 2022, a grand jury formally indicted Skipper on this charge, signaling the start of what would be a lengthy legal process. As the case moved through the judicial system, Skipper pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him, setting the stage for a trial to determine the full circumstances of that fatal night on Fitzgerald Street. The trial commenced in October 2023, nearly a year after Barnes's untimely death, with the prosecution and defense presenting their cases to a jury.
