On the night of October 13, 2018, Brandon 'King Tut' Broussard, a 28-year-old professional boxer, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately died from his injuries. Broussard was a graduate of Carencro High School and had attended Louisiana Tech, majoring in graphic design.
Known for his brave heart in the boxing ring, he had earned three championship belts during his amateur career and was a father to three children.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to two brothers, Shavis and Carlos Toby. Detectives determined that the brothers had traveled, one from Texas and the other from New Iberia, to meet in Lafayette with a plan to kill Broussard. In November 2018, 41-year-old Shavis Toby of Vermilion Parish was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. His brother, Carlos Toby, was also taken into custody by U.S. Marshals out of state and faced the same charge.
Following an eleven-day trial, a jury found Shavis Toby guilty of second-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence. Both Shavis and his brother Carlos were also convicted of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. Carlos Toby was sentenced to twenty-five years for his role in the conspiracy. However, in April 2023, the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal reversed Carlos Toby's conviction, stating the evidence was insufficient to prove there was an agreement to murder Broussard. The Lafayette assistant district attorney's office announced its intention to take the case to the state Supreme Court to have the original conviction upheld.
