In the cold winter of 2003, a tragedy unfolded in Alexandria, Louisiana, that would forever mark the community and its law enforcement officers. On February 20th, 29-year-old Alexandria Police Department Patrolman Jeremy 'Jay' Carruth, a man known for his dedication and courage, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. A veteran of the Louisiana National Guard's 239th Military Police Company, Carruth had served with the Alexandria Police Department for nearly three years, building a
reputation as a committed officer.
The fateful day saw the Alexandria Police Department's Special Response Team, of which Carruth was a member, execute an operation on Wise Street. Their mission was to apprehend a suspect who was wanted for a brazen ambush on another officer just the day before, where he had fired multiple shots from an automatic weapon into a patrol car. The suspect, a convicted felon on parole, was not expected to be at the location, but as the team of officers arrived, they were met with a hail of gunfire that lasted for over twenty minutes.
In the violent exchange that ensued, Patrolman Carruth was fatally wounded and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His partner, Patrolman First Class David Ezernack, was also mortally wounded and succumbed to his injuries five hours later. Three other officers sustained injuries during the prolonged firefight. The suspect responsible for the deadly assault was also killed by return fire at the scene.
The loss of Patrolman Jeremy Carruth was a devastating blow to his family, his department, and the entire Alexandria community. He was a father to two young daughters and was also survived by his parents and three sisters. In the years following his death, his family has continued to honor his memory, ensuring that his ultimate sacrifice in the service and protection of his community will never be forgotten.
