In May of 2004, Alan Thomas Waters, a 53-year-old male, was found deceased in his Baton Rouge, Louisiana, home. A chemical engineer and real estate investor, he had made Baton Rouge his home after moving from his native Wakefield, Massachusetts. An investigation into his death quickly focused on his ex-wife, Jan Waters.
The investigation revealed that Alan Waters died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The shooting occurred during an argument between Alan and Jan Waters concerning their two children. Following the investigation, Jan Waters was arrested and charged in connection with her ex-husband's death.
After her arrest, Jan Waters was released on bail in March of 2006. In October 2010, she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. At her sentencing, the 46-year-old admitted to shooting her ex-husband. A state district judge sentenced Jan Waters to 20 years in prison for the death of Alan Waters.
