In the late summer of 2017, the life of Dale Sands, a 53-year-old Allstate insurance agent, was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sands was reported missing on August 22nd, prompting concern among his family and colleagues. The search for the married father and grandfather came to a grim conclusion the following afternoon when his body was discovered in the backyard of a home on Great Smokey Avenue.
An autopsy would later confirm that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Sands' death quickly led authorities to a suspect, 34-year-old Daryel Johnson. It was in the backyard of Johnson's own residence that Sands' body had been found, a chilling discovery made by a child who was playing nearby. Police believed the motive for the killing was robbery. Evidence began to mount against Johnson, including the discovery of his fingerprints on a cigar wrapper inside Sands' stolen truck, which was located on August 24th.
A witness also came forward with damning information, telling investigators they had overheard Johnson on the phone making comments about needing to move a body. When Johnson realized he had been overheard, he allegedly threatened the witness and their family to ensure their silence. This, coupled with the physical evidence, painted a grim picture of Sands' final moments.
Following his arrest on August 31, 2017, Daryel Johnson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faced a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, intimidation of a witness, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, bringing a measure of relief to a community shaken by the senseless act of violence.
