In the late afternoon hours of a December Thursday in Nairn, Louisiana, a hunting trip among three young friends turned into a tragedy. Eighteen-year-old Galen Scott, a male, was hog hunting with two close companions when the outing took a devastating turn. The group was in a remote area just south of Port Sulphur when the incident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m.
What was meant to be a recreational pursuit ended in sorrow when 18-year-old Wyatt Evans mistook his friends for the hogs
they were hunting. Evans discharged his shotgun, striking both Galen Scott and 17-year-old Cody Jones. Deputies from the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a call of two people being shot and arrived to find a grim scene. Scott had sustained wounds to his head and leg and was pronounced dead at the location.
In the aftermath of the accidental shooting, Wyatt Evans was taken into custody. He was booked into the Belle Chasse jail on charges of negligent homicide for the death of Galen Scott and negligent injuring for the wounds sustained by Cody Jones. Jones was shot in the legs and transported to a hospital for surgery. He was expected to make a full recovery from his injuries. The community was left to grapple with the tragic consequences of a hunting accident that claimed the life of a young man and forever altered the lives of his friends.
