On a Sunday in February of 2020, the life of Robert Wells III, a 22-year-old male, was cut short. He was born on October 9, 1997, to his parents, Robert Jr. and Deborah Wells. In the years following Hurricane Katrina, his family had relocated to the St. Charles Parish area. He was remembered by his parents as a once 'wonderful, funny, intelligent, talented and compassionate young man.'
However, his life took a different path as he was lured by the promise of fast money and immediate
gratification. Despite his parents' efforts, he became involved in a street lifestyle. This choice ultimately led to his tragic end on February 16, 2020. On that day, Robert was in his car in New Orleans when he was killed in a barrage of gunfire.
Authorities suspected that his murder may have been the result of a drug deal that had gone wrong. To date, there have been no arrests made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. In a poignant and unconventional move, his parents chose not to hold a traditional funeral service. Instead, they published a candid obituary detailing their son's struggles, hoping that his story might serve as a cautionary tale to other young people who might be tempted by a similar path. They asked that any donations in his memory be made to at-risk youth programs.
