On a Monday morning in New Orleans, Louisiana, 17-year-old Tokoyo Jamal Palmer was on his way to the school bus stop when his life was tragically cut short. On January 26, 2015, the L.B. Landry-Walker High School senior was shot and killed in the 3700 block of Garden Oaks Drive. Palmer, a male student known for staying out of trouble, was an active member of his school community, participating in the Navy J.R.O.T.C, choir, marching band, and junior varsity basketball team.

investigation into Palmer's death quickly pointed to a dispute over a seemingly trivial item. According to New Orleans police, the motive for the shooting was an argument over a video game controller that Palmer had borrowed from the suspect and had not yet returned.
