In the days leading up to her death, Melissa had taken legal steps to protect herself from her estranged husband, Joseph Batten, who was 36 at the time. She had successfully obtained an emergency temporary protection order against him on July 21, 2008. Despite this legal safeguard, which prohibited him from coming within 100 yards of her, Batten tracked her down to her new residence.
On that fateful July day, Joseph Batten confronted Melissa in the parking lot and shot her multiple times with a 9mm handgun before turning the weapon on himself, ending his own life in a tragic murder-suicide. The Redmond community, which had not seen a homicide since 2004, was left to grapple with the senseless loss of a woman who had dedicated part of her career to helping others. Ironically, before her successful career in the tech industry, Melissa had served as a public defender in North Carolina, where she had worked within the domestic violence court system.
