In June of 2015, a grim discovery was made in a residential area of southeast Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Two women from North Texas were found shot to death inside a vehicle parked on the side of the road in the 8100 block of Boone Avenue. One of the victims was identified as 23-year-old Brandi Gilbert of Plano. The other victim was 23-year-old Corrin Rayford of Grapevine.
The women were found on a Friday evening after a resident noticed the car with its door open and alerted the police.
Initially, authorities had no known suspects or motives in the double homicide. The case remained under investigation for over a year. The breakthrough came in December 2016 when Baton Rouge Police announced the arrest of 23-year-old Jonathan Robertson. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Investigators determined that Robertson had shot both Brandi Gilbert and Corrin Rayford in the head during an armed robbery. After the murders, he drove the victims' car to Boone Avenue and left it on the shoulder of the road. A crucial piece of evidence that led to Robertson's arrest was DNA that was processed by the State Police Crime Lab. At the time of his arrest for the murders, Robertson was already incarcerated in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on an unrelated charge.
