Graves himself was entangled with the law, having been arrested in August on charges of human trafficking and kidnapping involving a female juvenile. The investigation took a significant turn with the arrest of Gene Allen Rawls. Authorities identified Rawls as a friend, and at one point, possibly a roommate of Graves. The two had been working together on Graves's property. Investigators believe an argument between the two men escalated, leading Rawls to shoot and kill Graves while he slept. After the murder, Rawls allegedly fled the scene in the victim's truck. In a bold move, Rawls reportedly drove the stolen truck to a meeting with investigators, where he was subsequently taken into custody. He was charged with murder and theft, with law enforcement stating that the motive for the killing did not appear to be related to Graves's outstanding criminal charges.
