In the late evening hours of Wednesday, May 24, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Markell B. Jackson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at Huber Park in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Deputies from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the park, located in the 2400 block of 4th Avenue, at approximately 7:30 p.m. following reports of shots being fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene and a community shaken by the violence that had just unfolded.
Markell, a recent graduate of LaGrange High School, was found at the scene with a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The news of his death sent ripples of grief through his family, friends, and the school community, who remembered him as a respectful and genuine young man. He had proudly accepted his high school diploma just four days prior to the shooting and had plans to attend SOWELA Technical College to study welding. An athlete who played both football and basketball, Markell was well-regarded by his teammates and coaches.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for the arrest of 18-year-old Demontoriyuana Charles, also of Lake Charles.
The warrant, signed by Judge Ronald Ware, outlined serious charges against Charles, including second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, and the illegal use of a weapon. A significant bond of $680,000 was set for his release. Authorities publicly appealed for information regarding Charles' whereabouts and warned that anyone found assisting or harboring him would face legal consequences.
