Sheriff John Benson Thomas II, aged 45, was shot and killed on April 11, 1902, in Victoria, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was attempting to arrest a man wanted for murder when the suspect produced a pistol and shot him. Following the incident, an angry mob captured the suspect and fatally shot him on the spot.
