Sheriff John Benson Thomas II, aged 45, was shot and killed on April 11, 1902, in Victoria, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was attempting to arrest a man wanted for murder when the suspect produced a pistol and shot him. Following the incident, an angry mob captured the suspect and fatally shot him on the spot. The case received national attention and was reported in newspapers across the country.
