In a selfless act to protect his family, Brian Murray, a 60-year-old male, was fatally shot in his New Orleans home on January 31, 2022. A well-respected trumpeter and music educator, Murray was known throughout his community as a gentle and kind spirit, deeply devoted to his family and the mentorship of young musicians.
The tragic events unfolded following a domestic dispute between Murray's daughter and her ex-partner, Edmond Ramee Sr.
In an effort to shield his daughter and one-year-old grandson from the escalating conflict, Murray brought them to the safety of his home in the Little Woods area of New Orleans. However, Ramee later appeared at the residence, forcibly entering the home.
After kicking in the glass of a screen door, Ramee reached inside and took his son. He then allegedly returned with a firearm and shot Murray multiple times. Murray was pronounced dead at the scene. In the wake of the shooting, Ramee fled but later surrendered to the police.
Edmond Ramee Sr. was subsequently arrested and booked on a count of second-degree murder. In May 2022, a grand jury indicted Ramee for the first-degree murder of Brian Murray. He also faced several other charges, including domestic abuse battery, attempted first-degree murder, and obstruction of justice. The death of Brian Murray was a profound loss for the New Orleans music community, where he was remembered as a talented musician who had played with renowned artists and a dedicated teacher who nurtured the next generation of performers.
