In the spring of 2016, a family argument in Natchitoches, Louisiana, ended in tragedy, leaving a father dead and his son facing a lifetime of consequences. On the morning of March 5, 2016, police responded to a call about a shooting at a residence on Scoot Loop. Inside, they discovered the body of 39-year-old Marlon Ray Rachal Sr., a Black male who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Detectives arriving at the scene quickly identified the suspect as the victim's own son, 19-year-old
Marlon Ray Rachal II. Later that same afternoon, the younger Rachal surrendered to the Natchitoches Police Department without a struggle. The investigation revealed that the fatal incident stemmed from a verbal dispute between father and son over a pair of speakers. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in the son fatally shooting his father.
Following his surrender, Marlon Ray Rachal II was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center. On April 15, 2016, a grand jury indicted him on the charge of second-degree murder, to which he initially pleaded not guilty. However, in November 2017, as part of a plea agreement, he changed his plea to guilty on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
On February 28, 2018, a judge sentenced Marlon Ray Rachal II to 30 years of hard labor in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections for the killing of his father. An appeal was later filed on his behalf, but it was ultimately unsuccessful, and his conviction and sentence were affirmed in late 2019.
