In the late hours of a Tuesday in Houma, Louisiana, a domestic dispute turned deadly, claiming the life of 17-year-old David Trahan Jr.. The tragic events unfolded on October 25, 2016, when 42-year-old Rhubin Scott Jr. confronted his ex-girlfriend at her workplace, causing a disturbance that led to his removal. Later that evening, at approximately 11 p.m., the ex-girlfriend went to her mother's home on Bayou Blue, and Scott followed her there.
Once at the residence, Scott opened fire,
fatally wounding David Trahan Jr., who was pronounced dead at the scene. The gunfire also struck and injured Trahan's sister and their mother. While both women survived the attack, the mother was left in critical condition. The sister was treated at a hospital and subsequently released. The male victim, David Trahan Jr., was a native and resident of Houma.
Following the shooting, Rhubin Scott Jr. was taken into custody by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office. He faced charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder and was held on a $2 million bond. During his trial, jurors were presented with voicemails Scott had left for his ex-girlfriend containing threats to harm or kill her. After a short deliberation of just over an hour, a Terrebonne Parish jury convicted Scott of second-degree murder. The conviction carried a mandatory life sentence in prison, with formal sentencing scheduled for December 20, 2017.
