On a tragic evening in Choudrant, Louisiana, the life of 43-year-old Rachel Denicola, a Caucasian female, was cut short in a sudden act of violence. On August 14, 2017, she and Anthony Denicola Jr., aged 46, were fatally shot in the yard of the home they were renting. The events of that day stemmed from a dispute with their landlord, who was attempting to evict them from the property.
The perpetrator of this double homicide was identified as 74-year-old John Nichols, the owner of the rental house. Following the shooting, Nichols himself contacted emergency services, confessing to the operator that he had just murdered two individuals and wished to surrender. Law enforcement arrived at the scene to find a grim reality.
Nichols was subsequently taken into custody and held at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
The investigation revealed that the deadly confrontation occurred after Nichols had asked the Denicolas to vacate the residence due to the expiration of their lease and his concerns about the property's condition. An argument had previously taken place where Anthony Denicola had allegedly cursed at and threatened Nichols. On the evening of the murders, Nichols retrieved a pistol from his camping trailer where he was living and went next door to speak with Rachel. When Anthony was called outside to join them, Nichols stood up and shot him in the head. As Rachel attempted to flee, Nichols fired at her multiple times. He then returned to Anthony, who was still breathing, and shot him several more times. An autopsy would later confirm that Rachel Denicola was shot four times in the head.
In a subsequent court appearance, John Nichols pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. His confession in open court acknowledged his guilt in the deaths of Rachel and Anthony Denicola. As a result of his plea, Nichols was sentenced to spend the remainder of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of his sentence, bringing a final, somber conclusion to the legal proceedings.
