In a tragic turn of events on November 6, 2017, Krystle Landor, a 28-year-old African American woman from the New Orleans area, lost her life in a violent encounter with her ex-boyfriend. The series of events that led to her death began when she called 911 to report that 36-year-old John Malveaux, against whom she had a restraining order, was near her home.
Despite her efforts to protect herself, which included obtaining protective orders and installing security cameras, Malveaux had
managed to follow her to her residence on East Elm Street. By the time St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, Landor had been shot. She was rushed to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. The incident highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the challenges victims face in seeking safety.
Following the shooting, Malveaux fled the scene in a pickup truck driven by another individual, Leslie Davis. A deputy spotted the vehicle, and a chase ensued. The pursuit ended in Pearl River, where Malveaux exited the truck, ran into a home, and took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities were able to detain and arrest Leslie Davis. Landor's family expressed immense frustration and heartbreak, stating that the justice system had failed to protect her, particularly by releasing Malveaux from jail after he had previously threatened Landor with a gun just weeks before her death.
