In the late hours of a summer night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a domestic dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving a family shattered and a community in search of answers. On August 20, 2017, 38-year-old Joseph Bunch III was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex on North Lobdell Boulevard. The initial call to police reported a shooting, and upon arrival, officers found Bunch deceased at the scene.
His fiancée, 26-year-old Jimeelah Crockett, was present and taken into custody for questioning.
Crockett initially told investigators a harrowing tale of self-defense. She claimed that Bunch had physically assaulted her, locked her in a bathroom, and threatened her with a gun. According to her account, she managed to escape with her two young children, grabbing the firearm as she fled. She stated that Bunch pursued her and, fearing for her life, she fired a single shot. Evidence of a physical altercation was seemingly present, as officers noted Crockett had scratches on her body and a busted lip. Based on her initial statement, she was released pending further investigation.
However, the narrative of self-defense began to unravel as detectives delved deeper into the case. A crucial piece of evidence emerged in the form of surveillance footage from the apartment complex. This video reportedly contradicted Crockett's version of events, showing Bunch backing away from her with his hands raised as she pointed the gun at him. This pivotal evidence, coupled with conflicting statements, led the Baton Rouge Police Department to arrest Crockett. She was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in the death of her fiancé. The couple's engagement, once a symbol of a shared future, ended in a tragedy that left behind a grieving family, including Bunch's thirteen children.
