Vickie Salassi Wax, a 51-year-old female, was a lieutenant with the Baton Rouge Police Department with 27 years of dedicated service. On Saturday, May 22, 2004, her life was tragically cut short while she was working an off-duty security detail at a local retail store. That evening, she confronted a man suspected of shoplifting. As she attempted to place him in handcuffs, a violent struggle broke out.
During the altercation, the suspect managed to overpower Lieutenant Wax, causing her to
lose possession of her service weapon. The assailant then used her own gun to shoot and kill her. The gunman's violence did not end there; he also shot and seriously wounded a store security guard and a customer who had bravely come to the officer's aid. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by carjacking a vehicle.
In the wake of the senseless act of violence, a massive manhunt was launched for the perpetrator. The search concluded when the suspect, facing immense pressure from law enforcement, chose to turn himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of grave charges for his actions.
