Vickie Salassi Wax, a 51-year-old female, was a lieutenant with the Baton Rouge Police Department with 27 years of dedicated service. On Saturday, May 22, 2004, her life was tragically cut short while she was working an off-duty security detail at a local retail store. That evening, she confronted a man suspected of shoplifting. As she attempted to place him in handcuffs, a violent struggle broke out.
