On a tragic evening in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the vibrant life of 37-year-old female blues singer Jackie Neal was cut short. On March 10, 2005, inside a local nail salon, her ex-boyfriend, James White, carried out a violent attack that stemmed from his inability to accept the end of their relationship. The harrowing event unfolded at approximately 6:15 p.m., forever silencing a rising star in the Southern soul music scene.
White, who had been reportedly planning the attack for at least
two days, entered the salon and confronted Neal. Witnesses recounted his chilling words, expressing his jealousy over her new relationship before opening fire. In a desperate plea for her life, Neal's words were not enough to deter White's fatal actions. He shot her multiple times in the chest and abdomen, causing massive internal bleeding that led to her death at the scene. Another woman in the salon, Angela Meyers, was also shot and critically injured as she attempted to flee the chaotic scene.
After shooting both women, White turned the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide attempt. He survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound, as did Meyers. White was subsequently arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder for the death of Jackie Neal and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Angela Meyers.
The legal proceedings that followed were fraught with emotion for the Neal family and the community. Initially, James White pleaded not guilty to the charges, raising the possibility of a death penalty trial. However, he later accepted a plea deal to avoid capital punishment.
