A late Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge turned tragic, leaving 30-year-old April Peck dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The chaos began on November 27, 2016, when Peck's live-in boyfriend, 48-year-old Terrell Walker, shot her and pushed her out of his vehicle on Essen Lane.
As a group of Good Samaritans rushed to Peck's aid, Walker made a U-turn and drove his car into the crowd, striking two people. One of the individuals hit was a 17-year-old EMT-in-training.
Walker then exited his vehicle and opened fire, wounding an emergency responder before fleeing the scene. He also crashed into an ambulance as he made his escape. April Peck was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A manhunt for Walker ensued, and he was located several hours later. When confronted by East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies, Walker reportedly refused to show his hands and fired at the officers. The deputies returned fire, killing him in the exchange.
The individuals injured during Walker's rampage were all expected to recover. Following the incident, the Louisiana State Police initiated an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. The East Baton Rouge District Attorney's office would have prosecuted Walker had he survived the shootout with law enforcement. In the wake of the tragedy, the community rallied around April Peck's two children, with the District Attorney's office helping to provide them with a Christmas tree and gifts.
