In the fall of 2017, a Shreveport, Louisiana man's attempt to recover his stolen property ended in tragedy. Bennie Livingston, a 65-year-old Black male, spotted what he believed to be his stolen white Ford F-250 on the morning of October 3, 2017. He immediately contacted 911 to report the sighting and began to follow the vehicle. During the pursuit, communication with the emergency dispatcher was lost.
Shortly after the call was dropped, authorities received another report of a white
truck that had crashed into a fence at the intersection of Myrtle Street and Pierre Avenue. When Shreveport Police officers arrived at the scene of the accident, they found Livingston inside the wrecked vehicle. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency services transported him to University Health, where he was listed in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Livingston succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators from the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit promptly began an inquiry into the shooting. The preliminary findings suggested that the individual driving the stolen truck shot Livingston during the chase. Approximately ten hours after the fatal encounter, Livingston's stolen truck was located unoccupied in the 1600 block of Ashton Street, abandoned outside of a vacant home. The vehicle was impounded as evidence.
In the wake of the incident, law enforcement officials began searching for the person or persons responsible for Bennie Livingston's death. At the time of the initial investigation, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects in the case and no arrests had been made. The investigation into the homicide is ongoing, and a reward was offered for any information that would lead to the arrest of a suspect.
