On a quiet Sunday, the 5th of November in 2017, the life of William Degrate, a 59-year-old Black/African American man from Monroe, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. The initial call brought officers to a residence where they discovered Mr. Degrate deceased, the victim of a homicide. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound, a stark and violent end to his life.
In the days and weeks that followed, investigators from the Monroe Police Department worked diligently to piece
together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their investigation led them to identify 33-year-old Toriano Chancy as a person of interest in the case. As they delved deeper, evidence began to mount, pointing to Chancy's alleged involvement in the death of William Degrate.
The culmination of the initial investigation came with the arrest of Toriano Chancy.
