In the early morning hours of June 2, 2018, the life of 24-year-old Savarea Stickman came to a violent end in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana. The incident, which unfolded shortly before 1 a.m. in the 7200 block of Bernstein Avenue, was the culmination of a drug transaction that had taken a deadly turn. Stickman was discovered with at least two gunshot wounds to his upper body and was rushed to University Health hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m.
The events of that night began when Jacory Robinson, age 23, and an unnamed 17-year-old male, arrived at an apartment complex on Bernstein Avenue with the intention of selling a large quantity of marijuana. Jamarcus Plater, a 23-year-old acquaintance of Stickman, had reportedly arranged the narcotics purchase and was seated in the back of Robinson's vehicle to negotiate the deal. It was during this exchange that Stickman allegedly began firing multiple shots at Robinson and the teenager.
In response to the gunfire, Robinson drew his own weapon and returned fire, striking Stickman multiple times. The 17-year-old passenger in Robinson's car was also wounded in the crossfire, sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm. In the ensuing chaos, Plater is said to have taken the marijuana from Robinson's vehicle, hidden it in his own car, and then fled the scene on foot. Police later located the wounded teenager a few blocks away and recovered a firearm, narcotics, and shell casings from at least two different caliber weapons at the scene of the shoot-out.
In the days that followed the fatal shooting, the investigation led to arrests. Jacory Robinson was located and charged with Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana for his role in the drug deal. On June 12, 2018, Jamarcus Plater surrendered to authorities at the Shreveport Police Complex. After being interviewed by detectives, he was arrested and charged with one count of armed robbery. Investigators also learned that just a day before his death, on June 1st, a warrant had been issued for Savarea Stickman's arrest for allegedly sending death threats to an estranged girlfriend, though authorities do not believe that matter was connected to the shooting.
