In the late hours of a Tuesday in August 2018, the life of 17-year-old Tajana Williams was tragically cut short in the Desire neighborhood of New Orleans. Responding to the sound of a gunshot, police officers discovered the young woman lying on the ground at the corner of Ursula and Abundance streets with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless violence that had claimed one of its own.
Williams had recently celebrated her high school graduation and was looking forward to a future that held the possibility of a military career.
The investigation into the death of the female teenager swiftly led to a person of interest. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, a 26-year-old woman named Joann McDaniel surrendered to authorities. McDaniel was subsequently arrested and booked on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Williams' death. The relationship between McDaniel and the victim, if any, was not immediately clear to investigators. The sudden and violent end to a young life left neighbors and family with emotional wounds, as they mourned the loss of a girl who was still a child in their eyes.
Years later, the pursuit of justice for Tajana Williams reached a significant milestone. In October 2022, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office successfully prosecuted the case against Joann McDaniel. Following a jury trial, McDaniel was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, as well as obstruction of justice, for her role in the 2018 killing. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Williams, ensuring that the individual responsible for her death would be held accountable for their actions.
