On a spring day in New Orleans, 38-year-old Racquel Gillard, a female, lost her life in a burst of violence. On April 14, 2014, in the Central City neighborhood, she was shot multiple times in the 2300 block of Josephine Street. The man who pulled the trigger was 17-year-old Johntrell Washington, who incorrectly believed Gillard had taken something from him. Witnesses reported that Washington confronted her, shooting her twice. After she collapsed, he stood over her and fired several more rounds.
The New Orleans Police Department quickly identified Washington as the primary suspect in the killing. An arrest warrant was issued, and he was described as armed and dangerous. For several weeks, his whereabouts remained unknown. Then, on May 8, 2014, detectives from the NOPD's Gang Unit received a tip that Washington was in the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Officers, along with the Sixth District Task Force, established a perimeter in the area and were able to apprehend him without any further incident.
Following his arrest, Johntrell Washington was taken to the Homicide Division for questioning. He was subsequently transported to the city's Central Lockup and booked on one count of second-degree murder for the death of Racquel Gillard. It was later revealed that this was not Washington's first encounter with law enforcement regarding a homicide. He had been previously arrested in connection with the killing of an eighth-grader, Ricky Summers, but the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office had declined to prosecute that case, citing a lack of evidence.
