On August 10, 2014, a hail of bullets from a drive-by shooting tragically cut short the life of 16-year-old Jasmine Anderson. The young girl, who was about to start a new school year, was simply getting a bottle of water when she became an innocent casualty in a conflict that was not her own.
The shooting, which occurred around 8 p.m.
on Burgundy Street, was a scene of chaos and horror, leaving a total of seven people struck by gunfire. Alongside Jasmine, 33-year-old Terrance McBride was also killed. Authorities later stated their belief that McBride was the intended target of the attack, which they suspected was motivated by drugs. The indiscriminate gunfire also wounded five others, including a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old boy who were both critically injured after being shot in the head.
Witnesses described a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Honda Accord, fleeing the scene after the occupants opened fire on the group gathered in front of a house. The brazen violence of the act sent shockwaves through the community, a neighborhood still rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. In the wake of the tragedy, the New Orleans Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the arrests of two suspects. Blair Taylor, 20 years old at the time, was identified as the alleged gunman and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. A second man, 25-year-old Jeffery Rivers, was charged as a principal to the crime, accused of supplying the murder weapon and the getaway car.
