On January 3, 2019, Frederick Richardson, a 48-year-old male from Baton Rouge, was fatally shot at a hotel on the Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette, Louisiana. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., when police were dispatched to the hotel in response to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Richardson with at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services transported Richardson to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries later that day. The Lafayette Police Department subsequently launched a homicide investigation into his death.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Nicholas Hebert, a 27-year-old man from Lafayette, was named as the individual wanted in connection with Richardson's death. Hebert was considered armed and dangerous as law enforcement sought his whereabouts.
Through a collaborative effort involving the U.S. Marshals Service Louisiana, the Violent Offenders Task Force, and the Lafayette Police Department's Special Investigations Unit, Nicholas Hebert was located and taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center and charged with second-degree murder. Following his arrest, a grand jury indicted Hebert on the second-degree murder charge, and legal proceedings against him commenced.
