In the early evening of June 12, 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm on Jackson Street in Shreveport, Louisiana, leaving a 34-year-old African American man, Derek White, fatally wounded. White was standing outside a residence at approximately 7:00 p.m. when a blue sedan passed by, and multiple shots were fired from the vehicle. He was struck multiple times in the upper body.
Emergency services transported him to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Shreveport Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the drive-by shooting. Detectives worked through the night, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to identify the person or persons responsible for White's death. Their efforts quickly led them to a suspect.
The following day, on June 13, 2019, investigators arrested 29-year-old Cadarius D. Brantley in connection with the homicide. Brantley, who was identified as a convicted felon, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, Brantley faced charges of illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of schedule one narcotics with intent to distribute.
