In the summer of 2019, the life of Charles Simmons, a 65-year-old man, was violently cut short on a street in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans. On the evening of July 16th, Simmons was shot and killed on Abundance Street. His death was one of at least two homicides that occurred in the city within a nine-hour period, contributing to a night of violence that left the community reeling.
