On a summer holiday meant for celebration, the life of 18-year-old Thomas Edelen, a White male, was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On July 4, 2020, Edelen was visiting the home of his friend, 18-year-old Janosch Joushua Belle, for a barbecue. The gathering took a fatal turn when Belle decided to show Edelen his "assault style rifle" in his bedroom.
According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, Belle recounted that he had disassembled and cleaned the weapon before
reassembling it. He then loaded the magazine, pulled the slide to chamber a bullet, and, while pointing the rifle at Edelen, pulled the trigger. The shot struck Edelen in the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. When questioned by authorities, Belle reportedly stated, "I just wasn't thinking." He also admitted to having been to a gun range on numerous occasions and being aware of firearm safety rules.
Following the incident, Janosch Joushua Belle was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The initial charge filed against him was negligent homicide. The event was described by law enforcement as an accidental shooting. Thomas Edelen, who had recently graduated from Woodlawn High School, was just days away from his 19th birthday. His death was mourned by family and friends who remembered him as a kind and vibrant individual.
