On a tragic Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of 33-year-old Frederick Hollis was cut short. On January 23, 2021, police responded to a call at an apartment on Earl Gros Avenue. Inside, they made a grim discovery: the bodies of Frederick Hollis and a 26-year-old woman, Laquincia Jackson. Both had been fatally shot. Hollis was a Black man.
The weekend was marked by a spate of violence in the city, with the deaths of Hollis and Jackson being two of four homicides reported.
The double homicide at the Tigerland-area apartment added to the growing concerns about gun violence within the community.
In the wake of the killings, the Baton Rouge Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Detectives identified 29-year-old Brandon Lavergne as the individual believed to be involved in the deaths of both Hollis and Jackson. Lavergne was subsequently arrested in connection with the double homicide.
