In the pre-dawn hours of January 9, 2007, the life of 34-year-old Troy Lamont Chesley Sr., a dedicated Baltimore Police Department detective, came to a tragic and abrupt end. After completing his shift, the 13-year veteran of the force was arriving at his girlfriend's home in the West Forest Park neighborhood of Northwest Baltimore. As he approached the residence in the 4500 block of Fairfax Road, he was confronted by a gunman in what authorities described as an attempted robbery.
A gun battle ensued, and though mortally wounded, Detective Chesley managed to return fire, striking his assailant. Chesley was struck multiple times and was rushed to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly led police to a suspect. Brandon Grimes, then 21 years old, was located at St. Agnes Hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his leg. Evidence recovered at the scene, including a handgun and blood that did not belong to the detective, linked Grimes to the fatal shooting. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. It was revealed that Grimes had an extensive criminal record, with numerous prior arrests.
In 2008, Brandon Grimes was convicted for the murder of Detective Troy Lamont Chesley Sr. and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case took another turn many years later. In 2025, while still incarcerated, Grimes faced new charges, including fabricating evidence and identity fraud. Prosecutors alleged that he orchestrated a scheme from prison, creating a fake ballistics report in an attempt to have his murder conviction overturned and wrongfully claim financial compensation from the state. This effort was uncovered by the conviction integrity unit, which identified numerous inconsistencies in the documents he submitted.
