In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 10, 2021, the life of 25-year-old Kendrick Johnese was tragically cut short in a parking lot on Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At approximately 1:00 a.m., authorities responded to the 8000 block of the busy thoroughfare to find a chaotic scene. Johnese, a male, was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The violence of that morning was not limited to Johnese. Two other men, both also 25 years old, were found at the location with apparent gunshot wounds. They were quickly transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as moderate to severe. The incident left one young man dead and two others facing a difficult recovery, shaking the local community.
In the weeks that followed the shooting, investigators with the Baton Rouge Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their efforts culminated on May 19, 2021, with the arrest of a suspect. Myangelo Mallett, 25, was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Mallett was charged with Second Degree Murder in connection with the death of Kendrick Johnese. While an arrest was made, a clear motive for the shooting was not immediately released to the public. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing as authorities continued to seek information from the community to bring a measure of closure to the families affected by the violence.
