On the evening of April 23, 2021, a dispute over a place in line at a convenience store on Hollywood Avenue in Shreveport, Louisiana, turned fatal for 33-year-old Kurjuan L. Mingo. The male victim, identified as a Black man, was inside the store shortly before 10:00 p.m. when he became involved in an argument with another man about who was next to be served at the cash register.
The verbal altercation escalated into a physical fight, prompting a bystander to intervene and separate the
two men. Shortly after the separation, the other man, later identified as Curtis S. Edwards, pulled out a handgun and shot Mingo in the head. Edwards then fled the scene, leaving Mingo critically injured. First responders arrived to find Mingo with a gunshot wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Shreveport Police detectives launched an investigation, utilizing witness interviews and surveillance footage to piece together the events of that night. Through their investigation, they identified Curtis S. Edwards as the suspected shooter. A warrant for his arrest was issued on April 27, 2021, charging him with one count of second-degree homicide, and his bond was set at $450,000. Believing Edwards had fled the state, possibly to Texas, authorities widened their search. The following day, on April 28, 2021, Curtis S. Edwards surrendered himself to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputies in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was awaiting extradition back to Shreveport to face the murder charge.
