In the late summer of 2021, the life of a talented makeup artist was tragically cut short on a street in Shreveport, Louisiana. Pooh Johnson, a 25-year-old Black transgender woman, was found dead in a vehicle in the early morning hours of August 23rd. The discovery was made shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the 300 block of West 74th Street, where authorities confirmed she had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Johnson, who was also known by her business name 'Titanizer Mua,' was a beloved member of her community, known for her skill in makeup artistry.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, the Shreveport Police Department launched an investigation into Johnson's death. Law enforcement officials stated that they were looking into whether her identity as a transgender woman was a motivating factor in the killing. Advocacy groups, including the National Black Justice Coalition and the Human Rights Campaign, quickly decried the violence, highlighting the alarming trend of violence against transgender and gender-nonconforming people, particularly Black transgender women. Johnson was noted as at least the 35th transgender or gender-nonconforming person to be killed in the United States in 2021.
