Nicholas Smith, a 23-year-old man from Birmingham, Alabama, died after a shooting that began on a Friday night and ended with detectives treating his death as a homicide. The night he was wounded, the city’s ordinary rhythms were interrupted by a call that drew officers to a home near the intersection of 44th Street and 12th Court North, where the first signs of violence were already fading into the dark.
