In the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, a vibrant life was tragically cut short on the night of January 9, 2022. Russell Ricou Jr., a 41-year-old man, was shot and killed following a dispute. The incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Conti Street, near Burgundy Street. An argument between Ricou and another man escalated, leading to the fatal shooting.
Ricou, who was unarmed, died at the scene from a single gunshot wound.
Born in Metairie, Louisiana, Russell Brewster Ricou Jr. had just celebrated his 41st birthday four days prior to his death. He grew up in the coastal community of Grand Isle, where he was known for his love of sports, particularly basketball and baseball. He graduated as valedictorian from Grand Isle High School and went on to attend Louisiana State University, earning a degree in dietetics. His friends and family remember him as a beloved individual who will be greatly missed.
The New Orleans Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, a suspect was identified and apprehended about a month after the shooting. James Patton, then 38 years old, was arrested in New Orleans and booked on a charge of second-degree murder. The investigation was aided by crime camera footage from local businesses, which played a crucial role in the prosecution.
James Patton's case proceeded through the legal system, with the Orleans Parish District Attorney trying the case. In March 2023, a jury found Patton guilty of manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was subsequently sentenced to the maximum penalties for each charge: 40 years for manslaughter, 20 years for obstruction of justice, and another 20 years for the firearm possession charge, ensuring a lengthy prison term for the man responsible for Russell Ricou Jr.'s death.
