His arrest was not directly for the murder but occurred during the commission of a burglary in progress. Initially, Provost attempted to mislead law enforcement by providing a false name, Cory Johnson. However, during the booking process, his conscience appeared to weigh on him, and he requested to speak with a detective about a homicide that had occurred in Lafayette on June 10. This confession linked him directly to the death of Mary Elizabeth Faulk, leading to his arrest in connection with her murder.
