Town Constable Benjamin A. "Ben" Martin, a 41-year-old white male, was tragically killed on February 1, 1902, in Moweaqua, Illinois. Constable Martin was attempting to arrest a restaurant proprietor on a warrant for illegally selling liquor. When Constable Martin informed the suspect of the arrest, the suspect responded defiantly, saying, "Come and get me." As Constable Martin approached, the suspect raised a shotgun and fired both barrels, killing Constable Martin instantly.
