Richard James Kalecki Jr., a 49-year-old man, was found dead on January 3, 2016, in a cemetery in Calumet City, Illinois. His death was ruled a suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Kalecki was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head, and preliminary reports indicated that he had taken his own life.
Kalecki was the prime suspect in the murder of his ex-wife, Alessandra De Moraes-Emiliano, a 37-year-old woman from Merrillville, Indiana.
De Moraes-Emiliano was fatally shot on January 2, 2016, at the Edible Arrangements store in Schererville, Indiana, where she worked as a manager. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the Lincoln Ridge Plaza. Kalecki was captured on store video entering the Edible Arrangements and was last seen driving away from the store in a rented 2015 Red Toyota Corolla with Ohio license plates.
Following the shooting, police briefly surrounded Kalecki's home in Crown Point, Indiana, as they awaited a search warrant to enter the house. Kalecki was also scheduled to stand trial in March for sexually abusing a child. The tragic domestic violence homicide investigation of De Moraes-Emiliano came to an end with Kalecki's death. Schererville Police Chief David Dowling expressed his deepest sympathies to De Moraes-Emiliano's family.
