Jevante Johnson, a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on July 25, 2014, in Calumet City, Illinois. The incident occurred during a botched drug deal in the 300 block of 157th Street. Johnson, who was also known by his rapper name "Vonno," was part of a stick-up crew involved in setting up a drug deal. The deal was intended to sell $275 worth of drugs, but it quickly turned into a robbery attempt.
On the night of the incident, Johnson got into the vehicle of the prospective buyers and announced a holdup. However, one of the individuals in the vehicle pulled out a gun and shot Johnson multiple times. Johnson was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn later that night. An autopsy confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Two men, Jamal Hoare, 22, and Jacob Wilson, 19, were charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery in connection with Johnson's death. Both men were part of Johnson's crew and were held on a $1.5 million bond. The charges were based on the fact that Johnson was killed during the commission of a crime, making Hoare and Wilson culpable. The man who shot Johnson has not been apprehended, and another individual involved in the incident was injured but survived.
Johnson's death highlighted the dangers associated with the lifestyle he rapped about. In one of his last posts, he mentioned the possibility of dying while robbing drug dealers. Despite his aspirations in music, his life was cut short due to the violent circumstances surrounding the drug deal.
