Timothy Beaty, a 41-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on March 27, 2016, in Carbondale, Illinois. Beaty, a beloved local musician known for his drumming in various bands, was attending a party at 402 West Walnut Street when the incident occurred. The party, which was hosted by the Phi Beta Sigma graduate fraternity, turned chaotic when gunfire erupted. Beaty was struck by a stray bullet while trying to protect two Southern Illinois University (SIU) student-athletes who were caught in the crossfire. His selfless actions saved their lives, but unfortunately, he did not survive the shooting.
The investigation into Timothy Beaty's death revealed that the gunfire originated from an altercation that spilled into neighboring yards. The Carbondale Police Department responded to the scene and found multiple discharged cartridge casings from two different guns. The investigation identified two suspects: John F. Ingram, a 23-year-old man from St. Louis, and Travis Tyler from Cape Girardeau. Ingram was found to have fired his handgun multiple times towards a house on Walnut Street and into the air. However, it was determined that Beaty was killed by a bullet from Tyler's gun.
Legal proceedings followed the investigation. John F. Ingram entered a guilty plea to aggravated discharge of a firearm and was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison. He is required to serve 85% of his sentence and will be subject to a two-year period of mandatory supervised release upon his release. Travis Tyler was found guilty by a Jackson County jury of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. His sentencing was pending at the time of the last available reports.
